Standard R'n'R beds??

Post by jaret83mk1 »

Okay long story short, we rescued our van last spring from a 8 year barn neglect and after much TLC (still a lot more required)
We're now at the stage of putting in rear seats/bed, Ive seen a few seats that fit the bill but when turned into beds a rear section is needed so that its at the right level. To me, these seat/beds were designed for the earlier T2 with a larger engine compartment.

Also JK make hinges but these are more suitable for the early vans.
There is a chap selling some on ebay which seem to lay flat to the engine bay
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/vw-volkswagon ... 1119200659" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
but I cannot find any plans on how to make these myself.

Does anyone have any information/pictures of some R'n'Rs that lay flat in the van? They must do, I mean the original Westies came with them I'm sure of it. Any help would be much appreciated

Aftermarket beds are all sold on the T2 standard. After all it's easier to make a raised base for the engine bay on a T25 than for a T2 owner to lower the whole bed :lol:

I'm sure even westfalia beds had a raised platform over the engine bay.

I have a Bluebird Customs bed and made my own base using 2x4 wood to raise the platform to the right height and ply to cover it from B&Q. I incorporated a pull out box section so I can access the engine.

I measured and double measure what sizes I needed and got B&Q to cut it as you get so many cuts with each purchase (I purchased the ply and 2x4's separately so I got enough cuts) :wink:

I also got them to cut a kickboard too. I used self tappers and some angled brackets from B&Q to make the pull out part and to secure the 2x4 subframe to the engine bay. And I have no wood skills at all

I have since covered it in carpet

Nope, the rear mattress sits straight on metal, and is the same thickness as the rear seat back & base. Everything's flat.

Ah, you live a learn. Seems an odd design given the engine bay is corrugated and a bit mucky (well mine is :lol: )

Only real prob seems to be that if you've got much weight on the rear cushion, the tangs for the lid chafe on the material slightly.

I used these people for my interior refit...

http://www.thecampershak.co.uk/category.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I can highly recommend them, the build quality is first class.

I cant find it in the product list, but I had a engine cover wooden frame made. It sits ontop of the cover, the exact height required for the r n r bed to fold down and rest on, it has a hinged part so that you can still access the engine bay.

I will take some pics later today or tomorrow if you are interested ? It cost £145 and was worth every penny. Be exact when measuring the internal dimensions of your van ... 5mm makes a difference apparently ! :oops: They modified it FOC for me... top drawer company.

They also do R N R beds.

have a look here https://club8090.co.uk/forum/garage_vehi ... e&VID=1635" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; this is my van and the complete interior I bought.

Thanks for that option pionte but I'm after one where I'm not requierd to make a box up at the back.

Your van looks very tidy too. :ok Mine is some way off.

I've also been looking at new flooring today, is it best to use 2 pieces of ply or can we do it it a single sheet?
I've heard theres 10x5 sheets out there somewhere (not your local B&Q mind)

I reckon you can't beat the original, factory folding bench/bed for ease of use and overall quality. They are out there, you get what you pay for but avoid the Caravelle GL spec one as the fold-down armrests (and the backrest in general) are too lumpy to sleep on. Consider having a good look at ebay.de and seeing what's available, You want a Multivan or Caravelle one if you want full width (around 1550mm) Westy are generally so-called 3/4 width and around the 1100mm mark.
Make sure you get all the fixings, backrest pegs (for M.van or 'velle), bolts etc as some bits are a bit of a mare to track down later.

My rear cushion sits directly on the engine bay cover. I will try and post some pictures here:
