Annoying Fridge Fan!!!!!!

Post by mwheatley »

Hi All,

I'm in northern France with the new Westy Florida (sorry, I've gone over to the dark side!!), and loving it! However, the fan on the fridge will not stop, it goes on all night and all day and is getting a bit annoying. The outside temperature is hot, and is about 30 degrees in the van at night so I'm sure this will not be helping but I wondered if there were any suggestions? Maybe the fridge is past it's sell by date or needs a good service? It is the same whether on gas or electric.

The fridge is the original Electrolux, the same as in the Westy California.

Any help is gratefully accepted.

Thanks,

Matt

If it's hot it will run otherwise the fridge will not cool. At the moment my fan runs almost constantly whilst the fridge is in use. Your fan (unless it has been replaced) is the original one. Which from experience they either squeal or don't work. Better a noisy fan than hot beer fridge.

When you get home replace it for a PC fan. :ok

Rather than replace the fan, how about replacing the temp switch on the back of the fridge. From what I can gather they are supposed to switch the fan on at something like 40 or 50 deg C but I reckon with age the trigger temp gets lower. I can step inside my van on a warm day and find the fan is running even with the switch off so I guess mine is switching on in the mid 20s. I have a pair of computer case fans fitted as the original fan was seized when I got the van so not too loud to annoy. At night In the cooler months the fan seems to be on for about 20seconds then off for about a minute then back on again. Bit like counting sheep to get to sleep! Summer evenings in France last month it was more like fan on for one minute then off for about 5 seconds then back on again. I just bought a bag of 40 degree switches from ebay so will fit next time I pull the fridge and see what a difference it makes.

The bigger the fan the quieter....a pair of 80mm fans will be quite noisy when compared to one 120mm fan and there won't be much difference in the CFM (the amount of air the one bigger fan is moving)

Can't honestly say I hear my fan at night but I know it works.

When I refurbed my westy fridge I replaced the original working but old fan with a 12 volt PC cooler fan
