Re: Engine rebuild or new engine
sorry to here that... what engine do you have ? If you put it into your signature at the bottom then its easier for people to advise.
If its a WBX (water cooled petrol ) then they are expensive to have repaired ... its like opening a can of worms, nothing is usually simple, one problem leads to another... They are not like your normal inline 4 cylinder engines.
IF its a diesel it may be different, let us know and im sure many more people will try to help.
There are a few companies that do exchange rebuilt engines.. some are better than others ! Best ask advice on here if you go down that route.

Re: Engine rebuild or new engine
If its a turbo diesel it's more likely the turbo rather than the engine...

Re: Engine rebuild or new engine 2l cu Aircooled
In need of advice what route to take now with the engine. Ive rang engine shops and they want over £2000 for a new engine. Bit steep i thought but hey thats life. Looking at around £400 for parts. Barrels pistons rings gaskets and tubes which would sort it. What companies are the best to use with the best parts. Also a thought would be the suburu route but who does the conversion and how much does it cost. Need it sorting asap bought for bug jam and missed it gutted cheers Nick

Re: Engine rebuild or new engine
Ive no experience of how good they are...heard some good reviews and some not good but half the price you have been quoted fitted!
http://www.elitevw.com/products.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Subaru option would be very expensive, £3k is quoted a lot as its a lot of work...especially as yours doesnt have any water cooling yet ! So it would probably be closer to £4k ? Dependant on how much work you could do yourself. Allow £2k for donor vehicle and specialist mods to make it all fit together .
Personally I would go for the Elite engine, and use the van some this Summer !

Air cooled, only one option have yours rebuilt by Laurie Pettit rather than a hotch potch of second hand parts replacement engine.
