play in accelerator pedal

Post by variety »

My accelerator pedal has a bit of play in it and was told this was losing me power when i put my foot down. Can you pull the slack through on the accelerator cable to reduce this? had a look and it seems fairly straightforward, but don't want to make a town halls of it! Any suggestions please

No reason why not, it's a bit fiddly trying to hold the solderless nipple whilst tightening it up though! So I found anyway. Ideally you need to tie the engine end at the carb/injection pump so that it doesn't move whilst adjusting. (assuming that the petrol engines have the adjustment under the pedal the same as diesels)

I wonder what engine you have

I know the WBX engines have an adjuster at the carb end, a plastic thing with grooves and a metal clip. If you have a WBX, have you checked there ?

p.s. = It will likely have a LOT more power after you adjust it correctly ;) Just make sure you don't over adjust it so that you are straining the cable at full throttle.

Hi Guys, thanx for response. My engine is a 1900 dg automatic, which makes taking off the clamping pin and adjusting relatively easy, unless you manage to shear it in half as i did! New one in post for tomorrow fingers crossed. the connector to the pedal moves enough that i can pivot it to shorten the cable, rather than pulling the cable through, holding it and then retightening the clamping pin. So f**ked it up to begin with, but have found a less strenuous and stressful way to put it back! (In theory). Difficulty finding the pin at short notice though, JK would have to order and GSF don't stock. VW heritage had it in stock £3.60 + £5.00 express delivery. So lesson learnt
