Slight nift of coolant up front
As said, I get the odd whiff of coolant (stale puddle smell) up front. Don't appear to be losing any water and no sign of a leak. Ideas?

Usually the heating valve leaking slightly, smell comes up through the gearstick gaiter. It only takes a tiny amount to get a whiff.

Re: Slight nift of coolant up front
I had a very small leak from the heater matrix and kept getting a whiff of coolant then weeks later started to get a small drop of the precious stuff collecting in the front passengers side .

Front-inside the van, or front-outside the van?
If it's front-outside, then could be a pinhole in the rad.

Check the drivers side of the heater box, level with your ankle, where the pipes connect, it's not unusual for the pipes to have the odd dribble with age.... Not enough to pool, but enough to give that damp smell when you open the door first thing

Re: Slight nift of coolant up front
I feel a right berk. Realised what it is. I couldn't figure out why I got this 'whiff' only on certain stretches of road. Turns out that since I gave up smoking a year ago, I can now smell water evaporation from shrubs and trees!!!

You gotta be bluddy kidding meCovKid wrote:I can now smell water evaporation from shrubs and trees!!!
Giving up smoking doesn't gradually transform you into a bloodhound. Although I must admit, an emptied coffee mug now smell like burnt wood to me
anyway, I'm of to a 40th birthday/camp in the woods today & tomorrow so the olfactory sense is in for a smoke related kicking

Re: Slight nift of coolant up front
Have to disagree Bren. I was amazed how many things I can now smell that I couldn't before. Besides, how would you know?
I think its the extreme heat we've had lately which is accelerating this evaporation with some areas parched. I must admit, theres no way I'd have noticed it after a few Old Holborn. Its the same with flowers, there are lots of those that I can smell now whereas before i'd have to be something fairly pungent for me to even notice one. I can pick up areas where people have smoked sometimes for an hour or so afterwards. Its quite astonishing - can smell it on peoples clothes too. I just find it foul now.

I found that my sense of smell also changed dramatically. Cycling around leads to a full on nasal assault.

Re: Slight nift of coolant up front
Well Ralph I do know (at least in part) as I go without a smoke for a considerable period of time over the winter months purely due to not going away as much - hence my coffee mug smelling of burnt wood even if it's on the other side of the room.
Simple physics will tell you that water vapour doesn't smell of anything, it's effectively distilled water and will reform as such as soon as it condenses. You're smelling the actual vegetation mate, although I'm sure you can 'feel' the extra humidity
