fuel injection and electronic ignition

Post by littlebaja »

hello guys im hoping to take delivery of air-cooled 2.0ltr very shortly, im a mechanic by trade but generally work on heavy diesels, does anyone here have a T25 with electronic ignition or fuel injection that could supply some details on what systems there running??

secondly, what is the general consensus on the vast range of aftermarket Carbs?????

It's a slightly modified version of Bosch L Jetronic. If you have injection, keep it, it's better than carbs.

the van im getting is standard as far as im aware but id like to venture into the realms of fuel injection, the usual better starting, better running etc etc.

is yours a standard vw system or an aftermarket one and did you fit it yourself?

Mines got the standard Solex carbs. L Jetronic was the VW standard fit injection system for certain markets. I thought you where buying one with injection.

sorry my bad,

i believe the van im buying has carbs but until i go and get it ive no idea,

however im aware that vans are great on economy and although it will be used for weekends away and not everyday use id still like to experiment with electronic ignition and fuel injection, the basics i can source and set up myself, any manifold mods i can do myself, its just knowing what sensors are needed,

with regards to the electronic ignition, the pointless systems that go inside the dizzy's, are the standard dizzy's without points adequate or could they be improved?

T25 2.0ltr are hall type electonic ignition as standard, points went out with the Bay window, stick to the standard dizzy as the advance curve is perfect for the 2.0ltr.
Induction mods, if you are a petrol head like me then fit twin delorto carbs and have it rolling roaded alternative the speedshop and us developed a fuel injection system similar to the megasquirt system that will bolt on, cost is around £1200-£1500 for the system and has two sides to it, one for the petrol and a separate side for mapping LPG to it.
The american Type 25's all had fuel injecion so that could be an option for you too.

Standard fit is a Hall type electronic ignition on both carbs and injection, as the injection was not sequential it just used a trigger from the ignition amp to switch the injectors.

ok, so all the sites selling electronic ignition as a replacement to points are only for the t1 and t2?? where there many early t25's that had fuel injection?

Yes there was some 1600 T25's made with points but where rare in the UK. 2ltrs had electronic ignition. Fuel injection was standard in some countries with more stringent emission regs like Sweden, Switzerland and North America and an option in the UK. There used to be lots off second hand systems available ay one time as owners couldn't understand them so changed to carbs. They are actually easier to repair as everything can be measured with a multimeter.

Megasquirt is the usual cheap'n'cheerful aftermarket injection. Solder up the ECU, source the various components, fit it all - then spend some happy time with a laptop mapping it all up.

does anyone know exactly which sensors are required to run a basic fuel injection system??

air flow meter?

crankshaft sensor?

temperature sensor?

oxygen sensor?

and does the butterfly need a cold running device or idle control valve?

This thread seems to have gone bump about a year ago. I'd like to resurrect it though because, assuming I stick with WBX power rather than going Subaru, upgrading the standard fuel injection system would seem to be the next logical upgrade. It sounds like something like megasquirt would also enable fully sequential LPG injection which would also be a welcome step forward in efficiency.

From brief comments on other threads, I suspect a few on here are toying with this kind of ignition/injection upgrade. Has anyone actually got a system up and running on a WBX yet?

I suspect I'm in a similar boat to yourself in as much as looking for a path to go down for an upgrade. My 1.9 DG runs fine and has only done 72,000 genuine miles but I would like just that little bit more 'go' on some of the hills. if this could be achieved by a not too costly conversion to injection I would certainly be interested.

there was a post last year from a chap hoping to get the injection system from a mk 4 golf working on his van but can't seem to remember if it ever came to fruition.

I have most of the parts here for a 50 deg TDI conversion with flipped audi box but still not decided to take the plunge yet and probably won't if I can get that bit more out of my low mileage orig engine if it could be done for sensible money.

glad you have tried to get this post going again.

I'm not sure how much power would be added by simply moving from carb to injection, assuming the carb's reasonably well set up.

Economy, yes.
Smoothness, yes.
Ease of starting, yes.

The obvious upgrade from a DG would be to drop a DJ in, complete.
