No power underload

Post by pfield69 »

Trying to get a 1900 Aircooled auto running nicely. Its been running bad for 2 years with a downhill max speed of 60mph.

The carbs have just been replaced as the old ones leaked air and were generally knackered. Lots off leaky vacuum pipes changed and ignition module changed as it was breaking down and upsetting the idle when in gear.

Now the van runs as sweet as you can hope for, lovely idle, in and out of gear. The downside is it doesn't actually want to rev when under load.

The timing marks also are miles out from where they should be.

Any ideas?

7 days before summer camping trip, so not much time to fix it

This certainly won't help it run at all well. Sounds like it basically needs a bloody good service.

Sorry, I didn't make it clear that the flywheel appears in the wrong place. 110degrees out of marks.
Running finish on load up to about 1/2 throttle then backfire etc.

Distributor and/or plug leads, more likely.

Leads are very new.

Distributor sounds possible. Any tests recommended for distributor? Perhaps it is a different one which explains why the marks are out yet the timing is rightish (based on measuring tdc)

Vac pipes connected right way around to the distributor?

Distributor checked OK, I think. Vac pipes tested ok.
Timing marks sorted (dog broken).
Its running better - no backfires etc but still lowish power.

Slight redirection. The gearbox is shifting too early. Oil ok, clean and right amount. Is there another adjustment somewhere?

My van is a twin slider tin top with DG 1900. It goes OK with a top end of about 80 (GPS speed - speedo reads 88). What kind of performance can I expect out of the CU2l auto? I maybe expecting too much. Getting to +50 is not too bad now but anything more is doubtful. This is a CU2l Explorer, fully fitted with Viking roof.
