Can I just remove the turbo?
My 1.6 TD was running beautifully but after a 'specialist' did some other work, he noticed the turbo was barely connected, so re-connected it for me. Since then, it is bugger to start, smokes loads when cold & whistles a lot. It now smokes from somewhere other than the exhaust. Can I just take the turbo off? It hasn't made that much difference if any to the speed/power? It is not a happy bunny and I am here in France with it. I need to ask the local garage to do the work - is this doable?

Sounds like a pipe has come off. Have a look around the turbo.

a bit more detail would help
what was the work done as in specificaly,as this may be a good pointer to the problem, and what was the reason for taking it in

Tah, I'll point him in that direction - I doubt if he has seen many

As for work that it went in for - nothing to do with the engine, none of which got done - well one minor thing did.

Re: Can I just remove the turbo?
Well, it is in the hands of Monsieur Herve now. Earlier this year he replaced the belt for us on the starter motor - the one a different garage (not THE specialist) had put on was two inches too big. Yep, it squealed a bit. Anyway, he did it in less than ten minutes, charged us ten euros including the new belt.
So, we went of to see him this morning. Sounds like the exhaust to me, but quite a shrill metallic sounding bottom note too but the van was also filling with fumes too. It is only a ten minute drive to his place. Expliqued in my best franglais, with mucho pointing & gesticulating and he took a look, looked at the emmission hose that was a bit crushed & someone had 'repaired' with black electrical tape. Checked his belt was still okay - with a big smile!
I left Mr Whiffy there in his hands and walked back the three miles in the baking heat with the dog. I will let you know how I get on.

From my limited knowledge of turbo diesels (mt Passat daily drive) if the turbo is now whistling and smoking where it wasn't before it was reconnected it had previously been disconnected as it was knackered.
P.S. Your starter motor doesn't HAVE a belt on it

An update!
I'll try & answer all the questions..
1. I am in Brittany
2. It is a belt - not the starter, sorry I meant alternator belt. It was so big it was almost jumping off. Changed now - cost EURO 10.
3. It is a short black pipe with a bend in it - I'll try & photograph it tomorrow.
Technical french is not my thing so bear with me. Basically, the VW is fine. From what I understand? there is a box? where the emmissions from the engine go - not the exhaust. It was broken - simples. Herve, not being impressed by the price quoted for a new one has repaired the old one. This is what the bill says :
REPARATION COLECTEUR D'ECHANPPEMENT AVEC TARAUDAGE ET ECHANGE GOUJONS DE FIXATION.
Proof of the pudding - went to collect it today. He unlocked the door, turned the key and it started first turn. No pre-warm, no stalling, no cutting out, no smoke and no noise - ran like a sewing machine.
So whatever it was he tried to explain to me - it worked. EUR 98.
Happy, happy days!!

E D I T I have looked it up and it is the exhaust. Well I am picking him up tomorrow (I was in the old Landy today & I dont do French on the phone) and I'll see how he is. But he was marvellous today so I am quite excited....
