Three issues.... Hopefully, no tissues!

Post by Flyingchunk »

So I'm putting my van back together today and fitting various things and figuring out the electrics which make no sense at all. However...getting there after many audiences with various passers by and neighbours.

After shoving myself under the van for a while, I have discovered two things, and forgotten about a third. Need this thing ready for action SOON, so it may be scanners out time. But not before some advice from the experts.

Here are the issues.....

1. Rocker cover gaskets have been changed in anticipation of solving the oil leak that decorates my drive. It hasn't.

So after sliding under and cleaning everything up, the leaking oil now seems to be eminating from the under side of the rockers where 4 rods meet the casing. Am I right in think these are push rods? Could this be a seal problem?

2. Whilst under I decided to give the thermostat accordion thing a squeeze that regulates the air flaps. I squeezed it.... It seems springy and goes back into shape ok. So I assume it fine. Then I noticed that there is actually NOTHING connected to it! No wire line that goes up into the engine to attach to the air flaps bit.

My question is..... What kind if wire do I need to fit to this, and is my thermostat thing ok? Was my assesment correct?

3. Engine temp gauge is not working in the van. Is this connected to the above issue? If not what are the checks I need to perform to find the fault? Where is a good place to start.

Apart from this, all good fun and loving working on the van.

I post some pics.

Morning...
I can answer number one.... Yes, push rod seals ! Not a long nor difficult job, have a read of the Haynes manwell and you will have no trouble replacing those!

As for the rest... Yes, mr Haynes will have those answers too !

If the bellows thermostat is anything like I had on my beetle then when cold it should be quite stiff and compact, as it heats up the thing expands, if unsure as to whether its ok or not , buy a new one. Hope that helps a bit.
