Which clutch ?

Hi all
i recentley fitted a 2nd engine in my van 1.9 DG,i have been have clutch problems since and need to fit a new clutch.
The problem i have is i dont no which one i need i used the clutch from my old engine [1990] on the new engine[1984] and i am not sure if its the right one, i have been on Europarts website trying to identify which one i need but the engine numbers on there site are nothing like mine.
017790 215mm
017791 228mm
My engine number is DG080671
Any help would be much appreciated in identifying which one i need

Surely if the 1990 clutch which should have been a 228mm fitted on the 1984 flywheel the it must have also been a 228mm ? What exactly do you mean by 'clutch troubles' ?

I am having trouble ingaging gears and the clutch bites as soon as i lift the pedal, my van is a 1990 but i am not sure if it is the orginal engine and the engine i removed the numbers are unreadable on it,
If the 228mm will fit the flywheel will the 215mm not also fit?

Ok a bit of a update
just spoke to GSF and they could identify my engine number but they changed the clutch on that year so could be either
Then spoke to VW Heritage the guy there reckons that a 228mm pressure plate will not fit in the recess onto the flywheel if it should be a 215mm, so i think the next step is to drop the box and go from there if i have put a 228mm clutch in then that should be what i need, if theres a 215 in and theres a gap to take the 228 i might have put the smaller clutch in and thats causing me the problems.
So to some up i have put a 2nd hand engine in used my old box and clutch which were working find with the old knackered engine.
If anyone has any thoughts they would be appreciated

I did have a go at bleeding it but after just reading wiki on it i did not do it that way so will have another go, when i did the engine change i did not remove the clutch pipe but unbolted the slave cyclinder

Evening all i have just bled the clutch again and while i had my head in the engine bay i remembered something i did when removing the engine and box
[ please dont all shout at me this is the first VW i have owned never mind T25 and i am nearly 50]
When removing the gear linkage i undid the nut on the splind shaft instead of the 2 below it to remove the linkage
If i have put that back slightly out a spline or 2 would that give me the symptons

Difficult to engage 1st and 2nd when stationary and with the engine not running and a reluctant reverse which will go with a crunch
The clutch i have fitted is a 228mm so must be correct i measured the fly wheel off the old engine

I just had my clutch changed along with a new slave cylinder two days ago. Went for a 40 mile drive and found the clutch engaging when the pedal was barely lifted and the pedal was very soft to push. Then it stuck in reverse. Turned out to be a faulty new slave leaking fluid. Another new one was fitted today and it is all working properly again.

However, a few years ago the nylon ball at the bottom of the gear stick started collapsing which made gear changing impossible. As soon as that was replaced everything was ok again. So check both out.

Have checked the nylon ball all ok so will change the slave cylinder as this is a cheap option then go from there

Just a thought. You just said it was difficult to engage gears with the engine not running, but gears can be engaged without using the clutch with the engine switched off. So the symptom sounds as if is not clutch related at all. If it is not gearbox related it would seem to be linkage related.

I will also have another look at the splined connector on the box the i took off, the more i think about it i am having the same views as your self more box or linkage problems than clutch itself

So to make sense of this ...

You CAN get gears with the engine off and you CANNOT get gears with the engine running ?

That sounds like another spigot bearing job I'm afraid.
