1.9DG Total loss of power
"Magnus" (named by my 3 year old son who hated "Daisy") has a 1.9 DG with Pierburg Carb. Went for a 20 mile run down to the beach for a very hot day of sun, sea and ice cream. Ran well all the way there. Set off home this afetrnoon and after about 1 mile problems set in. Wouldn't tick over - restarts easily, but dies straight away with foot of gas and also immediately dies if you try to pull away. Has recently had new coil, dizzy cap, rotor, leads and plugs. Before I order a new ignition amp, does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: 1.9DG Total loss of power
battery cables clean/tight/in place?
battery charged?
in engine bay - wires to coil/distributor/spark plugs all clean/secure?
deffo got petrol?
do the red warninglights on dashboard come on when you turn on ignition to first position?
does engine turn over - or just go clunk?

Re: 1.9DG Total loss of power
Thanks, yes checked all leads, all the right lights come on on the dash, van turns over lovely on the starter and will fire up, but as soon as you go to pull away, just dies. Will just about move on the flat with lots of revving and clutch feathering but if you try to pull away as normal, just dies. I've checked the little cone filter in the carb but that seems fine.

Re: 1.9DG Total loss of power
are you getting fuel from the fuel pump?

Re: 1.9DG Total loss of power
have you checked the inline fuel filter just after the tank ? look under the drivers side ( rhd ) you should see a plastic inline filter... my bet would be its full of sh 1t and is restricting the flow. cheapest easiest place to look first.

Re: 1.9DG Total loss of power
I get this occassionally on mine. Engine fires fine, but dies immediatley unless you rev the nuts off it. Also doesn't pull away well to get to safe place when it happens on a high street (it never happens on a quiet road eh)
Anyhoo I've put it down to the auto-choke sticking, as I find a quick blast with spray lube around the choke mech sorts it out.
thats after I ...
changed the main fuel filter
cleaned the little one
changed the s.plugs
new ht leads
new dizzy cap & rotor
new fuel pump & rod (this did help a lot thought, worth doing)

Re: 1.9DG Total loss of power
Thanks for all the useful tips - I intend to start working through them later this week. Fortunately (if you can say that) all went wrong fifty yards from my mothers house (handy for getting the boys home too) so the old boy is parked up there. I'll pick up a fuel filter from GSF, get the tool box and pop down one evening this week and let you know on progress. PS, showing my inexperience here, but is fuel pump push rod an easy check?

Pump off
Pull out the rod
Measure with a measuring stick
No one has mentioned an air leak, so I will
Check your vacuum hoses for any that have come off or look cracked

Re: 1.9DG Total loss of power
Update time - popped into GSF and picked up a filter and a push rod (both for less than £7!). Filter was a bit of a tidler so stepped up to a Coopers Z29 (still under £2 at most factors). Got to mums tonight crawled under and changed the filter - old unit filter paper completely black so well past it's sell by date. Pooped the fuel pump push rod out and noted rounded end worn flat and measured just under 98mm - popped new one in. All back together started up and ticking over lovely - left running for 5 minutes and still ticking over lovely. Not able to bring home tonight so took for a mile run round the block (including a very steep hill) and still running fine. Thanks for all the advice. Picking up tomorrow night to bring home - hopefully with no further updates necessary.

Re: 1.9DG Total loss of power
Bugger! Spoke too soon. 2 miles in and missing and popping. Partial loss of power (foot flat to floor and gets over it a bit). Cut out out a few times and a couple of backfires. Back to the drawing board!

Re: 1.9DG Total loss of power
two miles..on a cold engine, took 6-8 mins?
well the choke comes off at that point, which brings me nicely to my point of air leaking into the inlet side weakening the mixture.
stamping on the gas richens it up briefly
also.. does the coil get hot?

Re: 1.9DG Total loss of power
Recently changed coil but retained old one so I'll take a drive out tomorrow and see if it gets hot - i'll swap back to see if that makes a difference. I'll also take off all the vacuum hoses and give them a clean to see if there are any cracks - let you know. In the meantime do you think its worth ordering a new ignition amp? I've a found a source selling new Febi Bilstein units for £23 so not too much of a sting. If anything else comes to mind please let me know and many thanks for the continuing help - much apreciated.
