OIL WEIGHT & VISCOSITY
Using the proper oil also means to follow the owner's manual recommendation for oil weight and viscosity.

Oil must provide protection over a wide range of temperatures from cold starts to long hauls. So the SAE has an oil-flow test that determines the rating at 0 degrees F (low) and 210 degrees F (high).

When an oil does well at both extremes it gets a “multi-grade"| rating that includes a number/letter followed by a dash and a number, such as 5W-30.

If you live in a hot climate or are driving through a region where a combination of high heat and high-altitude are going to be encountered, your owner's manual will probably give suggestions for a multi-grade or “all-season"| oil such as 15W-40.

Such oil has the cold flow characteristics of 15-weight at start-up, yet the coating and protecting property of a 40-weight oil at the high temperatures.

First figure thickness cold; second is thickness hot (in very crude terms)

recorded too near the exhaust whuch drowns any metallic noise, but could be tappets, doesn't sound bad

sounds like a tappet , do a oil change
also check the exhaust system for any leaks

Sounds quite bad to me..................one of my tappets is noise when its cold or the engine hasn't run for a while, that sounds more like bearings to me

You will soon know ,if it disappears after a run it's tappets (welcome to the club) if it doesn't its a bearing.

I agree mark , mine had a split at the flange (ooo er) and the escaping gasses did sound metalic

Well one oil change later using 15/40 quantum oil and a genuine filter and a 15 minute run noise gone.. yipee. I have never heard such a noise from an engine that wasn't terminal.

The engine itself has only covered 40000 miles (installed by VAG... big bills) and has had a new vw exhaust on it 2 weeks ago (another big bill; but luckily i didn't pay either).

Therefore i would like to give a big thank you to everyone who helped out with solving this problems. It realy helps when there is a community who helps out when someone is in trouble. Only problem now is I have no excuse to not pick the inlaws up from the airport!

I look forward to regular visits to club 80-90

I reckon the lads done well, an' we got a result. Bit early to start the real celebrations, but bring on the next opponents.
