Re: oil in header tank.
If that was a petrol inline 4 I would say it was the head gasket BUT if that was an injection Scirocco or Golf I would say it's the oil cooler (a common fault).

Could still be an oil cooler issue Emm ... having no real knowledge of their set up but their oil cooler I believe is the same as all the petrol injection models.

Fit all 2.1 Petrols and all Diesel.
As well as a whole range of other VAG models

Re: oil in header tank.
I have just finished bypassing oil cooler by joining the two water pipes together. Flushed out the water system. So will now run for a bit and see if it returns

Re: oil in header tank.
You can take off your old oil cooler.
connect some hose to each end.
place the oil cooler in water and blow through the pipes, holding one end of the pipe sealed.
If you get bubbles, you know the oil cooler is leaking!

not sure if the same....but Ghost I think it was had to flush his out several times before the oil in the coolant actually went.. but that was on a petrol engine. Can't see that it would make much difference, but.......

Re: oil in header tank.
Having had no oil loss/return to header tank, We think it is the Oil cooler. The question is now, Do we really need an Oil cooler? It runs perfectly well without. Is it a case of "its there so it must be needed". Or something else. I need to convinced of the merits of cooling oil with scolding hot water.
Cheers.

Replace it, VW didn't put it there for nowt. I believe many diesel owners fit addition/alternative oil cooling ... try looking on Brickwerks
