The engine I used was from an Audi 80 1z without immobiliser.

Had the conversion already done on my van when I got it. Not the best of jobs as I later had to source turbo drain and decent LH engine mount after the home made one sheared and stranded me a few months after I bought it. Sourced these parts from HA Projekt in Germany. Also used their bit of flexy hose to join the 1Z turbo to a new standard JX exhaust. The original conversion used the undersized CS exhaust welded onto an extension and flange with only the right hand support to the sump. If the engine mount had not have failed, the exhaust would have soon dropped off. Now the exhaust is supported on both sides as originally designed.

After that I had a timing pulley failure that killed that engine so got a running M reg Mk3 Golf TDI, packed it behind the van and swapped the engine in the street. Not so difficult as I already had all the parts and wiring in place. The whole front panel of the car unbolts so quite easy to get the engine out. This car had immobiliser too but I used the original ECU and immo box in the van from the previous 1Z. I recall it was very difficult to get access to the immo box in the golf as it was bolted in behind the dash.

The converter took the immo box, transponder and ring, and the pedal sensors and left them in a waterproof box in the engine bay so I have the option of extending the wiring and fitting them properly if I ever get round to it. The ecu is inside a waterproof bag behind the battery. In theory I would get better fuel milage as the pedal switches cut off fuel when brake pressed. The flyby wire pedal looked a bodge as it uses the original T25 pedal with the potentiometer bolted to the van above it but attached to the pedal with a tie wrap! Four years/25000km later it is still on the same tie wrap but I do keep a spare handy just in case.

Am using the original 1.6na clutch still and gearbox. Clutch fine as I don't abuse the extra power but it would be nice if I could afford for a different final drive in the box to cut down the revs when cruising (or perhaps cruise at a higher speed). Am running the TDI fuel filter and the intercooler is down next to the gearbox using mostly ducting from the donor car.
