There seem to be quite a few different solutions to the dipstick problem when people upgrade - reusing the old JX dipstick is the best I think (I think mine is froma GTD engine and doesn't mount to the alternatir bracket very well anymore.) Getting an oil leak-free seal is also challenging!

However you set it up the most important thing is to do an oil change and get the correct oil level before marking the dipstick (I just knicked mine with a hacksaw) - make sure u give it plenty of time to settle first.

The first van I bought had the wrong dipstick and the seller didn't tell me - I ended up with way too much oil in on way home, and am pretty sure that I did an already pretty tired engine a fair bit of harm. Hence the username i chose when i registered to learn how to sort it out!

My method :
Empty sump, level ground. 4.5 litres of oil, including filter change (if my memory is correct, please check that figure). Run engine. Stop engine. Wait for oil to drain back into sump.
Using stick or wire or similar that is long enough to reach bottom of sump, dip oil through aaz dip stick tube. Mark where top of tube is on this stick or wire. Remove stick/wire. Align oil level on stick/wire with upper oil mark on aaz dip stick. Mark on stick/wire where aaz dipstick meets its handle. The distance between the two marks on the stick/wire is the amount needed to be removed from the aaz tube.

In the end, I took more off than needed and used some packing on the dipstick to get the oil level and oil mark to align.

I was surprised by the thickness of the tube. Metal filings from hack sawing won't be good if they get to the oil pump! I was lucky.

I had my dipstick extended (ooer missus!) for my 1Y engine, by Phil Miller on this forum, who fitted the engine. A bit of dipstick was welded on the end (overlapped and shaped with a grinder). Added 3.5 litres, started the engine and ran until the oil pressure light went off - took a reading, and marked the dipstick for low oil level. Added the other litre, then marked for high oil level.

One thing i've noticed is that as the dipstick tube on my 1Y goes slightly over horizontal to make it accessible via the flap, I sometimes get a false high reading, as the oil flows UP the stick in the split second that it is slightly inverted as you draw it out. I read it about 5 times every time, to get a better idea whether i'm getting a sane reading. As i've been keeping a close eye on it, my neighbours must think i've got obsessive compulsive disorder :D

Before getting the custom dipstick sorted, I started using a bass guitar E string to get an idea where the level was.

I have an AAZ engine and dipstick too. Anyone know if and how I can remove the AAZ dipstick tube & fit my old cs dipstick?
