Engine Fastenings Type and Size Resource?

Post by NigelM »

As above where can I find info on what bolts and nuts etc. are required. I have searched the Wiki with no joy. Particularly interested in 1.6 diesel engine, but all info appreciated.

Am I being remarkably thick, or what?

There's one of those bloody annoying (and remarkably ineffective, but that's another story) anti-spam signup questions.
Audi, VW, Seat or Skoda (type of these words)

Umm...?

Used to be http://www.orbitalfasteners.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for me. Just google or Yellow Pages for "fastener suppliers" near you, and you'll find somebody.

Strange that they have the exact same bolts as they fit to their vehicles!

But for how much...? It's not as if they're anything strange. Within a few variables, a fastener is a fastener.

F'rinstance. The socket cap M8x16 that hold the front upper balljoints on were mentioned earlier. Orbital charge £13 for a hundred, 12.9 grade. 13p each. And, yep, over the counter they are happy to sell you just a couple. If I've just had a handful of odds'n'sods, they usually don't bother to charge, just point me at the charity box on the end of the counter. I doubt they're much different to any other fastener supplier in that.

What's VW going to charge? Quid and a bit each, assuming they don't need to order a box of a dozen and charge you for the whole thing? I've been on the receiving end of that at dealers before...

After working in a mate's workshop, with a whole raft of bins of new fasteners, I now keep a little storage unit with new fasteners of various sizes - it seems like a luxury at first, but it's been invaluable.

I've found these guys quite useful in the past. Although they tend to price by the hundred or thousand they are quite happy to supply singles. I usually order a few of a lot of different sizes to make the p&p worthwhile.
