engine failure
hi everybody this is my first post and i'm crap with the computer, so should be fun
i've had my westy now for three years doing a lot to him, as in porsche steering wheel bmw cream leather front seats bmw bbs 16 wheels lowered custom exhaust i made
and sourcing the correct interior as the 1 that was in it when i purchased him i think may have come from a caravan.
and done the couple of bits of bodywork wich i,m going to get him resprayed soon. anyway about us the first outing we (me and the misses) had out, i dropped a socket set into my running low mileage engine, wich ripped the cambelt off and completely f****d it. so i did what anybody else would do and went from a 16d to a 1.9d wich i patted myself on the back for, having never fitted any engine b4 it ran and has been great. but i now have a new problem wich has ended up in the bogey bus sitting on my drive for the last six months
. i was happily driving home moaning about it needing a bit more poke to it when i went around the roundabout pulled up at the lights and my engine decided to rev all the way to the top of his voice so i pulled the key out but he carried on shouting, now im not a violent man but i wasn't taking his abuse so i shouted a few choice words back at him and gave his dashboard a right good seeing 2, whilst being smoked out eyes watering and ears bleeding,
any way he won because at that point i got out and ran to a safe distance thinking he was about to self combust, the road was covered in black smoke and he then made a small bang noise followed by oil out of exhaust and a few sparks, i left it 10 min then tried to start it again but hes stubborn, so i waited another 10 as i figured this works with the misses so why not bus,
and it did i got it home about a mile and a half and it was fine untill i left it for a few hours and hes never ran since. ive tried a few times he turns over with a lot of white smoke fine but just wont kick in.anyway i hoped you liked my little story but what i would like to do now is put a mk3 golf tdi in him i'll be doing the work myself with a m8 of mine who helped me when i put the aef in, i would just like to know what gearbox is best suited i have th 1.6 and a 1.9 petrol gearbox i currently fitted in the van or do i get rid of both and put in a five speed? and what do i do about the cooling? any help would be appreciated. thanks ricky i'll post some photos of him in all his glory soon.

Re: engine failure
Sounds like too much oil - too much oil and Diesel engines run away as they start to run on the oil itself... Wow, must have been fun..
Re: engine failure

Re: engine failure
Had the same problem myself when a turbo went. All you had to do was put in top gear and stall it to prevent it screaming like a rocket. Having said that, with an automatic box, your only option is to walk away and watch the smoke - until it's all been burnt. BOOM!
This doesn't help you but you'll know for next time lol.

Just about. I did start copy-editing it, but started to lose the will to live.
How the hell do you drop a socket _set_ into the engine?

Re: engine failure
pmsl cheers, The battery died so i had billy my uncle(ssvc president) jump it, and whilst the engine lid was off and the van running again i decided to drive around the field (dubfreeze) to get some charge in the battery. I never noticed that id left the socket set open on the side.
worst mistake ever.

i learned everything i needed to. pretty much straight away after that incident. in a way it could be seen as the best thing that could've happened.
