Can anyone give me a step by step of what to do to sort out an airlock

sorry to hi-jack this thread but I have had exactly the same problem.
It started last night when my van started running hot (1.9dg) whilst ticking over on my drive. I turned the engine off and noticed that the radiator was stone cold. I checked the header and expansion tank and both appeared fine. I have just bled the system as per the brick yard iddiots guide and a fair bit of air came out. After running the van up to temperature all appears to be fine (hot radiator, fan kicking in etc).
I did however notice that there is a small crack on the header tank which appears to be letting in/out a small amount of air. According to the brick yard guide the system is pressurised. Is this what would have caused the problem in the 1st place??? It is not leaking water but you can see bubbles indicating that air is getting in/out. I will obviously change the header tank, but it would be nice to know if this is the route of my problems
