One final thing, the garage is about a mile away but the RAC want £90 to tow me there.

Because I broke down on the M1 that was classed as my recovery. They could have "recovered" me to the garage but they were shut by the time the truck turned up. So now, it's an extra "recovery". Muthahubbards.

I'll try it in 2nd and see how I go.

So, there y'go - they couldn't recover you to the garage.

No, it's finishing the job now the garage is open and you've had a chance to unload all your stuff out...

it sounded like Mr Itchyfeet was saying that coolant could be coming through the seal between engine and transmission which I'm guessing isn't right.

I was saying that if you have a coolant leak from a hose or some place that is running down the engine that could be what you are seeing, I saw a post before on the other side once where somebody was asking about an oil leak that turned out to be coolant.

It could well be the spigot bearing but I think it could also be an oil leak contaminating your clutch or possibly something wrong with the box. Now you are saying there is no leak so I'm confused.

I'm changing my spigot bearing at the weekend as i'm fitting an AJT rebuild 1st time I will have changed this bearing, I think flywheel does have to come off, going to try the hydraulic method, have a 15mm shaft ready and a screwdriver if that doesn't work.

I'm pretty certain it does BUT mine was off anyway. I used an M6 rawlbolt shell and made a slide hammer of threaded rod washers and a weight ... the 'hydraulic method' frankly scares me

without the tools, experience or space to start dropping the gearbox myself, its going in to the garage. Disappointed about that as I like to try all things myself once but I'll ask if I can watch and learn.

Like anything it's easy when you know how.

I have taken the gearbox off twice on my own on a gravel driveway, you don't need many tools but you do need to know what you are doing, the gearbox I took off last Friday dropped off the jack and nearly on top of me so even if you know what you are doing you can still make mistakes, will be using a different method in future

The biggest issue I've found is getting the old girl high enough to get the bellhousing out from underneath when doing it at home ... no poblems with the transmission jack on the 4 post ramp at work of course

Living in big London there's no driveway at mine (is at my parents but couldn't get the van there), and I park on the street. On a hill. So dropping the box just wasn't an option this time.

Asked if I could help with it at the garage but elf and safeti said no.

Hadn't seen this post earlier....but as soon as I read your description...my nightmare relived itself. Mine went on a busy traffic-light controlled crossroads at rush hour. Boy, was I popular!!! Was stuck in third, so couldn't even pull off. All gears engine off, no gears engine running! AA got me 2nd,,,,kangarood off the lights and crawled slowly home....AA followed me...less than a mile, but still hairy as had to stall it at every junction as it wouldn't disengage....

Well. New spigot bearing and clutch, plus had number 1 cylinder plug time-serted which I'd been meaning to have done for a while.

£541 parts, labour and VAT.

She's changing gears like a car now and there isn't the lumpy idling that I had before. But still, makes you realise why we try and do most things ourselves.

did my spigot bearing today and big thans to Ian's tip of the rawlbolt, I will stick some pics up on a new post as I couldn't find anything in the wiki.
