I've yet to measure which size lever it is, but even if it needs the ball joint swapping, is it really as simple as unbolt the old one and bolt in a new one? Details in the manuals (Haynes & Bentley) are a bit vague.
I pushed it and it went all floppy!

simples 14mm new solid shaft from brickwerks. 4 nuts and 1 bolt/nut from below, easy with a drop down syncro wheel carrier

Fitted this morning and its great - it seems to have fixed the sloppy gear change I've been experiencing for some time 
which means it had been bending / getting ready to break for some time too! All nice and precise again, just like when I bought it. 
As a bonus, I just thought I'd test whether the MT spare would fit - and it does! It's tight, but it clears the steering rod-thing by about 3-4 mm. At least it gets the spare out of the back, but I'll still be looking to get the rear-mounted spare wheel carrier - I can think of other uses for that space in front.
