MOT fail if speedo in kilometres?

Post by richlaz »

Just browsing around on the site Wiki, and on the "importing" section, it states that if the van's speedometer is in kilometres, it will fail the MOT!?

https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Ne ... _Importing" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

My van has been in the country 8 years now, and as far as I'm aware, nobody has ever mentioned it...

I know most cars' speedos show miles and kilometres, where T25's don't, but I've got used to converting into miles as I'm driving (e.g. 48kmh = 30mph)

On another note, from the 'experts' is the yellow 'french' headlight tinting legal/MOT'able .

I don't think a KPH speedo is an MOT issue - it certainly wasn't a problem for us a couple of months ago. I understand that it's now a legal requirement however for newly imported vehicles, but I'm not sure whether you need to retrofit a new dial on campers imported in the past?

No. Not a problem. It's not part of the MOT!

Illegal in France for the past 10 years except for the old cars that had them originally. You have a really sheltered life. Contact GCHQ - I'm sure they can confirm!

Its one of the areas where the MOT differs from Construction and Use requirements.

By law (unless van built before 1984) you are required to have a speedo which can display MPH, but this isn't part of the MOT test.

Regulation 35..."every motor vehicle shall be fitted with a speedometer which, if the vehicle is first used on or after 1st April 1984, shall be capable of indicating speed in both miles per hour and kilometres per hour, either simultaneously or, by the operation of a switch, separately"

This country of ours is totaly bolloxed
We drink in pints but milk is litres
We do mpg and buy fuel in litres
We use imperial in so many measurements and buy it in metres.

Stuff kilometers and all that foriegn stuff.
If you're travelling on an english road with a 30 mph limit, you should have a device saying what speed you at IN miles per hour
