Piston Ring replacement ?

Post by hal2710 »

Hi All again.

After getting Bertie running ok, thanks to all again, I have noticed that I use alot of oil. Cant find any leeks, but can be smokey on start up, but NOT every time.

When I go for a 5-10 mile run to the tip, full of oil, on the way back the oil buzzur starts going off. I can stop it by revving up etc. When home and engine cooled down and oil checked again its on "Min" The back of the van is oily gerenally and sometimes on the 5-10 journey when slowing down for roundabouts I can see white-ish smoke in the mirrors.

I've had a compression test done.

Cylinder 1 ---- 2 ---- 3 ---- 4

Result 140 -- 140 -- 120 -- 130 +/- 2 psi

Any ideas please ??

Valve and or guides or ring wear
You need a leak down test to determine which.

And you need to address the oil leaks aswell as the pressure tested with a wet gauge

wow thats alot of oil for 5-10 miles, got to be leaking out surely as well as a worn valve guides/rings as indiated by the smoke.

When you say you can't see any leaks are you saying the engine is not at all oily? if it is then thats where the leaks are.

Hi, Yes errrr.

The leaks I refer to are from each rocker cover, but are only very very slight, ie the kitchen roll is a bit wet from the drop of oil.

When I said the back of the van is oily, I mean the back window and tailgate area above the bumper is oily. I can write in the muck on the rear window and it feels oily.

What is a leak down test and wet pressure test please.
