Subaru SVX motor oil cooler.

Post by chapperss »

Hello All. I've just bought this bus with the SVX motor. but its still got the stock sump, so ground clearance is not great. so i've just ordered a cast ally one from "smallcar" (not cheap!).I might have to modify the RJES support bar slightly, but thats easier than modifying the sump!
However the other ground clearance issue is the oil filter which sticks down a long way, as its mounted onto a "water to oil cooler"(well i'm guessing this is what it is?). Is this the same on other subaru engines? and Do I need the oil cooler? as the motor runs nice and cool anyway? IfI i can remove it then it would move the oil filter up about 80mm and get rid of the ground clearance issue. Thanks steve

Use a shorter oil filter - unless you are already using a short one?

No, dont think I have a short filter,I'll look into it thanks. Ground clearance of the sump/ oil filter is about 100mm and about 100mm lower than anything else. I dont think it misses the ground by much on some of the lanes around here !. Steve.

These guys http://inlinefilters.co.uk/index.php?ma ... s_id=13813 will have a filter to suit - look up your original measurements for the stock filter that you are using then look for one with the same characteristics (non return valve/sizes etc but with a shorter height eg,
Height: 72mm
OD/Width Max: 76mm
OD/Width Min: 76mm
Thread: M20x1.5
By-Pass Valve PSI: 20
ADV/SP: ADV
then look for shorter than 72mm)

FFR-PH6811 (B227) , as above, is listed for the svx motor with a height of 72mm which is quite short - what height is yours?

Thanks for all the info. it's a tiny filter already so 72mm is probably about right. I'll measure it later. I emailed "smallcar" about removing the cooler ( their website shows a svx engine in a van with no cooler)and I got a very quick reply which said i could remove it. So good news, but they also say I need to block of the oil pipes to and from it. I would have thought the oil went on from the cooler to lube the engine!? or is it a separate line from the pump that just drains back to the sump? Cheers Steve

OK ignore previous post about oil pipes! there are of course coolant pipes! so now it all makes sense, and i can just block off these and remove the cooler.
