Painting bumpers (1984 T25 Holdsworth petrol)

Post by gutmeg »

Hi, and a good day to all the Ladies & Gents
Have posted a few times on here, and there is a always an answer which is great.
Can anybody suggest the best way to tackle this please, I have not got a paint sprayer, and my bumpers have got an amount of surface run on, so I can rub down and paint etc, what would be the best type to use for a good smooth finish please and hopefully also stop the rot appearing!
Many Thanks for your assistance
Regards
LLoyd

I painted mine the other year. Basically, take them off the van, degrease them and then sand off any rust scabs, using coarse 80 grit paper, going up to say 150 grit, to get a nice bare metal finish. If you can afford it, use some rust proofing primer, like a 2 pack etch primer [this can also be applied by brush] though if you can spray; observe H& S issues too. Observe 'em any way, i.e dust masks etc

Once primed and fully cured, carefully flat the primer using say some 400 grit wet/dry paper, degrease again, and then apply your paint colour. If you've busted through the primer back into metal though, you will need to re-prime, or it will soon rust. If you choose matt/satin black, then you could use aerosol cans which will give a half decent finish. Before you apply your last coat, carefully flat the surface again to remove any dust spots and apply the last coat. Dont forget to degrease it too, before the last coat!

Like everything, its all down to good preparation to get a decent looking finish. :ok

Many thanks for the reply Kentish Campers, I will carry out as you say, it looks as though it may take a while though, anyway I will make a start.
Thanks again
