Automatic on my 1.9dg

Post by project25 »

After the praise of yesterday in getting an MOT for my van, today has been the first time I have really driven it any distance. In fact this is the first time I have driven anything automatic, except a twist and go scooter but that dont count.
On our mad mile the gears went 1, 2,3 really quickly up to 25mph then it was wait getting to 45 mph at 2500 rpm. Is this normal? It sounded like it needed another gear.

Hi again, I guess by no responce to my question all automatics are working well and where out at the weekend on the road where they should be. I managed 50 mph at 2700rpm on Sunday. Are these rpms correct, still sounds like it needs another gear.

Hi Kev, So these motors really rev high compared to modern engines. I always thought the flat 4 engine was fairly low revving.

I have a 2.1 auto.
I dont have exact figures, but roughly 30mph = 1800rpm, 60mph = 3200 rpm, 70mph = bloody hell thats loud.

Are 1,2,3 all close together ratios, so in gear3 goes from 25 mph all the way to what ever top speed is

I think you'll find if you stamp your foot down and hold it there it will not be in top at 25mph
the auto box changes with permission from the governor which tells the hydraulics to do their stuff

a better more detailed explanation is here http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automatic ... sion12.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I guess the more I use the motor the more I will be able to push it. The first thing to fit in the interior is a loud radio then.

My 1.9 dg auto certainly isn't a ball of fire but it will cruise nicely at 56mph and will go to 70 if it needs to. Climbing hills is interesting (it chooses what speed we do) usually no more than 40 mph up longer steeper ones. I found that changing the gearbox ATF was a good move. I have used a vacuum device to suck the atf up the dipstick tube an changed the contents of the sump 4 times (2.75 litres each time) Now the ATF is remaining red and clear and the gears change so much better.

If changing the ATF fluid.Its a good idea to remove the pan on the bottom and checking the ATF filter.These do break down and bits of mesh can block the oil ways.I know because it happened to me.Brickwerks sell the filters and the pan gaskets.To drain the ATF undo the nut holding the filler tube to the box.This is what happened to my filter.
