lots of blue smoke
Hi guys,just rebuilt the dg engine with pistons and liners from gsf and heads from vw heritage all seemed ok the first 300 miles till this morning on start up you would think it was two stroke clouds of blue smoke eventually cleared a bit took her out and its giving a puff of blue smoke when I slow down then when I accelerate a puff of blue smoke,stopped and waited about an hour same again on start up,i am using Halfords 15/40 I have been really careful with the running in compresson test is 120 on all cylinders.no back pressure from the oil filler I am just about ready to throw the towel in,just to mention the Haynes manual and the brooklands manual both say different things about rebuilding an engine???whats the best repair manual.thanks Rob

Sorry to hear of your woes here.
Blue smoke when slowing down and a puff when accelerating again is usually associated with a valve guide problem. Your compression test results seem fine and also indicates it is less likely to be a piston / bore problem.
If it were I, I would deliberately make it smoke a few times, slowing down and speeding up for a good few times, then stop it without driving "normally" and whip the plugs out to determine if it is just one cylinder causing it (it likely is). At least then you have narrowed it down.
Must be VERY disheartening mate, I feel for you.

Just thought, odd that it was OK for 300 miles ? A broken oil ring would not show up on a compression test, just a thought. Mind you, that would blow smoke all the time. Sudden lack of oil (blockage) to a head causing a guide to partially seize ? The oil gets up there via the hollow pushrods iirc (it's been a good few years since I was last "inside" my engine - I had "issues" then = oil and water mixing "issues" - bliddy "O" rings not sealing
)

I would suggest taking it to a main dealer to get a rough idea of the likely cost of doing it,
then you can go away and know that it really is worth persevering

As said it does sound more like valves leaking oil rather than rings none of the seals will let oil in so must be valves or rings

Hi guys,thanks for the replys brand new heads fully built from vw heritage I will take the head off tomorrow and will post the results.I just hope its a valve guides.still under warenty.

When removing the head, try and do it without disturbing the liner or the seal can become dislodged and leak oil into the water. Ask me how I know

Should change the bottom seals even if they are only 300 miles old
You can never guarantee the liners have not lifted a mm and thats all it takes for some dirt to contaminte the seal :

So that is engine out, pistons off, the lot = Oh dear

It can be done engine in but my back just isnt up to it anymore so i would personally remove engine

Hi just to let you all know,heads off pistons and liners out,agggggggggggggg piston in pieces skirt gone,oil ring in bits.going to get the others crack tested and back to GSF to see what they say.season over for me,

The lesson is never buy from gsf as the quality of there parts is often poor
You may find gsf dont want to know because you fitted them and there is no proof of poor quality
I think you if funds permit should order up from heratige and ask for a gsf refund if they refuse and agree to exchange then sell the gsf ones
