Engine mounts on Aircooled 2ltr

Post by Realize »

Hi Guys

So I was changing the heat exchangers today and was going ok until I got to the engine mounts all 4 were separated by a split in the rubber.
I have replacements and have removed the engine bearer but still cant get at the top nuts to get the old mounts out.

I read somewhere that I may need to remove the alternator and fan housing.
Can some one please advise on the procedure for this?
Do I have to remove tinware from engine bay side or underneath, my Haynes manual sucks for this info.

Any helpful hints appreciated, I also need to get some replacement tinware that bolts to underside of the heat exchangers, any ideas where I can get this???

Cheers Jay

Hi All

Engine mounts done, bigger job than I expected with all the rusty snapping tinware etc.
Did fan belt too and replaced heat exchangers, just need some tinware from somewhere to go under heat exchangers as old ones rusted out, any one know where
I can get some for Aircooled 2ltr?

Cheers J

Those bits of tinware can be had from VWHeritage. They come from Germany (VW classic), and they are heat deflectors that fit between the sump and the heat exchangers. 2.0 Aircooled yeh?

Ping me a PM and I'll find you the part numbers as I bought those very items last year. Think I've got them written down somewhere. They're about £40 each tho........

When I rebuilt the engine on mine I had all the tinware powdercoated and replaced all the nasty pozidrive screws with A2 Stainless caphead bolts. Muuuuuuuch better now.

I did a load of research into getting the tins I needed, so if you need any more, I should be able to help with part numbers. Drop me a PM.
