Sound Proofing

Hey chaps,
Am I right in thinking that diesel vans had better soundproofing fitted at the factory??
My van was petrol, but now has a tdi.
I would like to fit some sort of sound proofing to quieten things down a tad and there's none at all fitted to mine!
I've had a look at the different types available, wondered what others have done.

Mine has some thick foam on the bulkhead forward of the engine - it looks pretty rough now and im worried it traps water so I'm looking to replace it

I have sound proofed mine with Flashband, its a tar based tape that can be applied onto the panels. I have covered the engine area, door panels, cab floor and then patched it on each panel throughout the van. You can buy it by the roll in various widths from B&Q and other DIY stores.

Makes quite a difference and its now a pretty quite van inside. Think there is a Wiki on it.

You won't need to weld it - the rust will all be held together by the tar. Whelk pots are tarred and after 40 or 50 years you can have a complete pot with no steel inside! The cast iron bottoms seem to last longer though.

I'd thought of using that 'dynamat' until I found out the cost. Flash band is a Really good idea, nice one
Would probably use some felt type matting as well.
My old engine was unbelievably noisy and was astonished at how quiet the tdi is, but still can't easily hold a conversation with my girls in the back without them shouting.
Will have a look online and order some up.
Will post up some pics as I get the job underway.
And don't worry Mike, will be leaving this job till autumn- don't want to soak the new investment!!

Mike - is it a real pain to remove then? I had bought a roll a while back thinking of doing the inside of the door panels with it - don't want to dig my self another hole

Sorry am I being thick. Flash band. The repair stuff. Do you just run it along in strips over the engine bay.

well if you get the pannel clean and apply it warm and it bonds on well, err could be a pain to remove, secret maybe to try a bit some place and also dont fit it over a join in a place that will be cut when a new panel etc is fitted,but its dense stuff and does work,also very cheap

best to use a roller when fitting or it will peel of and trap moisture when the weather becomes hot

Yep nightmare to remove so if you have any welding or rust treatment to do, I would get that sorted first.

When you lay it on the panels you can apply a bit of heat with a heat gun or hairdryer to help mould it, not to much though as can become to soft. I lay it on the panel similar to applying stickers or vinyl so that you dont get any bubbles/creases, applying it in strips, butting it up against each other.

And when the flashband gets hot, your van smells of tar... And when it catches light..... Not for me thanks.
I searched for a diesel soundproof rubber mat (gen vw) that covers the whole rear bulkhead. Does quite a good job.
Also have a google for closed cell insulation, you can buy it in rolls about £20 a meter. I'll try to find a link later..

Also vw classic steel the sound deadening mat new , but it's around £300. Made for the job, but... Just thinking, probably not suitable with your deck lid..
