That is smaller than the one that is in my daughter's Punto and I can pick that up with my little finger! I would say that it is very underpowered for a van!

I too have experienced freaky starter moments. My peculiarity is that my battery loses power when it sat on the drive (no surprises there) so I always trickle charge before I plan to go out. She starts fine, I drive down the road for 10mins to fill up with fuel before hitting the motorway and she refuses to start - acts as if the battery is flat. Dim lights on dash, whurr, whurr etc. My only solution has been to have jump leads at the ready and connect to leisure battery and she fires up straightaway. It's not just after short trips either, she will do this after hours of driving. Needless to say I have taken advice above and ordered the discounted larger battery after checking the dimensions were going to be ok. The numbers on mine stated Type 063, 360EN and 41 amp. I will let you know how I get on.

At nearly 30 years old the van is on it's 4th, 5th or even 6th battery....someone just went 'Cheap' by putting such a small battery in there.

The listed battery for a 2.0l Aircooled is code 065 (52 - 54ah with 510 - 540 CCA) obviously the recommended code 100 gives more in reserve.

Your battery is definitely under powered but by the sounds of it, you might have other issues.
Look at:
The starter bush (the small oilite bush situated inside the bell housing that supports the front of the starter motor)
Earth leads (on the nose of the gearbox) best just to add a second main earth somewhere else and leave the original untouched.
The copper braided lead that goes between the starter solenoid and main body of the starter (this corrodes and you end up with half the amount of wires)
The spade connector to the solenoid (which may look OK but where the wire is internally corroded)
The starter (ignition) switch, below the ignition barrel (these burn internally)
Main positive lead/eyelet....check for integrity.
