Starter Motor compatability

Post by Felix512 »

Hi

Does anyone know if there is any compatibility between starter motors from various gearboxes or indeed from any other engine setup?

I have an autobox coupled to a diesel and I think that the petrol starter fitted isn't man enough to throw the diesel around fast enough to get it to start.

Any thoughts??

Hi the gearbox has sold with all the bits.
I think your best bet would be to get the starter motor rebuilt and see if they can make it spin faster.

In the essence of completion for those interested. Most VAG auto starters seem to be very similar, I have successfully used a starter from a Merc v280 auto with only slight modification to one of the bolt holes. This starter is over twice as powerful as the original at 1.8kW as opposed to the paltry .8kW.

Here are part numbers for this starter.

Available new for about 60 quid outright.
