There are so many variables it's impossible to say. Does it include removing and refitting the engine or just chucking a new complete unit in ? Does it include removing and refitting all ancillaries (EXHAUST !! water pump, hoses, fuel pump, carb etc) ? Does it include the cost of supplying and fitting a clutch, flywheel, spigot bearing ? Replacing any worn parts or leaving them for you to do later ? Bleeding the system up ?

See what I mean ?

Hey Ian thanks I see what you mean. It involves removing the old engine and refitting a remanufactured engine. He has made up a few gaskets and mentioned a few switches but other than that nothing else is getting replaced. As he said a basic out and in job ( if there is such a thing lol) :?

Previous owner had one fitted with new clutch and other bits for £1050. No idea if it was a good price.

I paid £450.00 for old engine to be compression tested and then removed cos it was knackered. Then all ancillary items swapped over and engine tuned etc. He also put in the new clutch and thermostat housing. (I supplied thermostat housing) and a new battery.

Thanks all for the replies. The van has a new clutch and water pump (and radiator). I am so mechanically inept its laughable. I dont have lots of dosh but i do love my van and am determined not to give up on her lol. I have been told rust wise for her age she is in reasonable nick and also that she is my mid life crisis. ( do us woman have them  ) Im hoping 700 will cover the engine and i will tackle the fuel issue myself ( No laughter please) and i may even make it to volksfling in August ..... 8)

Hey Faggie i wish i was you friend before lol. This guy was a friend of a friend so thought i could place my trust in him. (i hope i still can) had a wee issue with my car right outside his unit yesterday and ended up walking home with my car and van keeping each other company. Gear linkage sorted in car today drove home engine light came on found long nose pliers hanging from engine and engine cover missing. ( didnt inspire me with confidence as he charged me 90 for a 10 min 25 part. friend???? lol. Thanks for the reply. :D

Bluebell.........

for future reference contact David Mylett Motor Engineers. He is near Thornliebank, south of Glasgow. I have used him quite a few times both for the van and my other motor when I lived in Glasgow.......he is a general motor engineer but owns and works on veedubs too. Excellent work and service.

I would say 2 hours to remove the Engine, 2 hours to refit ( I can do it in this time on my own without and hoist or air tools.) Now the difficult bit removing the exhaust, this could take 1 hour or a day ! dependant on how corroded the nuts/studs are, but as you are having a recon engine refitted he wont have to worry about drilling out snapped of exhaust studs , so I would guess at another 2 hours to swap the exhaust , then dependant on what ancillaries are being swapped over , alternator, 30 mins, water pump and thermostat housing can be a real nightmare, especially if it is an early pre 85 model ( as mine is ) (I have spent countless hours re drilling and re tapping threads ), fitting carb an hour, adding coolant and bleeding system ... 1.5 hrs , tinkering 1 hr ? so 10-11 hours sounds about right at a guestimate ... im sure a garage with VW van experiance could do it a whole lot quicker !

Lesson learned here. Go to a VW friendly garage every time. Cost ended at £830. She is home now with oil leak, cutting out and not bled. Not a happy bear lol :(
