I have a 5 speed dog leg gear box,but what i want to know should i be able to push down on the gear lever to get reverse,it goes in gear ok but doesnt push down,is this normal are some gear boxes different form others?

It pushes against a spring to go to the left and then forwards ... not pressed down.

I Replaced all the bits I could get hold of at the front end on mine and now have to push down to get first. Didn't have to before this !
not sure which bit makes the difference though

I agree - have to push down on mine too to get reverse. Worth noting that as the plastic onion wears, the gear lever can sink a little meaning you no longer have to push down. To my knowledge, thats how its meant to be Ian, reverse a push-down job unless something is worn out. Not aware of any differences and the lockout is to prevent accidentally going in reverse I suppose although on a dog leg, its hardly an easy path.

indeed on the 5 sp there is a lug to make you press down, i remove this brkt as its as good as impossible to accidently get rev

Should you have to push down to get reverse you mean?

Yes, I think so when all is back to factory fresh.
It's definitely a detent 'by design' on the Syncro which has 'G' opposite reverse.

Before I renewed the front selector components, I could move freely into any gear but the stick had actually sunk over time by at least 1/2" - if you lift the gaiter you'll probably find that the onion is worn out and the stick has dropped slightly - see if you can lift it. Its fine without a reverse lockout but you may find that the onion breaks apart eventually and is a warning that you probably need to get in there and replace stuff. I did shop around for these parts though rather than buying everything in one place (front was Brickwerks, rear Ebay I think) plus I made some parts up by thinking laterally!

Remember, 5 speed sticks are usually thicker than 4 speed which is why Brickwerks add a modified onion to 4 speed kits if you order a 5 speed repair kit. Order a front repair kit from ebay and it'll probably be a 4 speed kit so watch for that.

Ok, hands up ... I was wrong .... down, across and forwards for reverse. Spring across and back for 1st after 9 years and change you'd think I would remember
