front to back water pipe

Post by ermie571 »

even'nin all,

I have a small drip from one of the front to rear water pipes 1984 dg pipework.

We have been compensating with toppingup reservoir tank. But the pipe really needs to be replaced. Some time ago there was discussion about the "blue pipe from wicks"? - How easy is it, and what fittings do we need?

Or do I bite the bullet and get a vw one?

I haven't done the blue pipe thing but would do it like this

if the end of the old metal pipes are good, save them (cut off 8-12inches from each end)
get some blue pipe same or slighlty larger diameter than old metal pipes (I have no idea what sort of diameter the blue pipe is available in)
get some flexi hose that matches the outside diameters of the old metal pipe ends and the blue plastic pipe (halfords sell some with different diameter at each end, else check out car builder solutions
http://www.nfauto.co.uk/cbs_products_new.htm for hoses and all manner of adapters

you'll probably need at least two hose jubilee clips on the joints to the blue pipe

I did mine same way expect I got the plastic VW pipes from a breaker. I can't vouch for how well blue plastic stuff works, but at least one person who posts on here (sorry can't remember who) has done it successfully

hope that's some help

should have said I found it an easy job, but took a while due to having to remove the petrol tank, some say it can be done without removing the tank

Skell,

thanks very much - that makes a great deal of sense. :D

Now hoping and praying that the tank doesn't have to be dropped....
