Have I got a burnt valve?

Post by nutbox »

Hi there,
I was wondering if you guys could help confirm my suspicions whether I have a burnt valve or whether my engine needs a bloody good tune up.
Anyway the reason why I ask is because ,a few weeks ago I pick up my van from my friends where had some welding done and when I was driving it home it was popping under accerlaration and had lack of power.

Anyway the engine is a 2.0l AC and has been parked p for a while and today I started it and it sounded bad it was rattling and the engine was rocking from side to side and kinda sounded like it was only running on 3 cylinder
Also I had to turn the van around and reverse it on to my drive which has a slight incline and it struggled and popped.

So I done the piece of paper over the exhaust and tapped against it which to me says that it's sucking into which I thing if I ain't wrong means burnt valves,am I right?

I have got to do a compression test which I hope to do is weekend and see what comes up.

All help appreciated thanks dazz :ok

As you say do a compression test.

Yes do the compression check.
But, this could be a combination of hydraulic tappet drain and or, a plug lead breaking down.

Hello,

More likely to be ignition fault IMHO..

Valves do 'burn out'.. but usually with symptoms.. typically .. spitting on tick over and popping at the exhaust on over run..

Hopefully a cheap fix... :)

Cordialement..

are you sure the plug leads are on the correct spark plugs.it sounds like an ignition prob to me or maybe a vacuum leak.

Now it could be a vacuum leak because I checked the pipes and some of them are cracked and I am going to change them ,what sort of size of pipes do I need ?

Well I had a look at the engine to day and first off I found that number 3 and 4 ht leads were swapped around  so I swapped them over and started it up and the engine sounded miles better plus no popping :ok

Anyway so I went on with the compression test but I only did it cold, but I will do a warmed test tomorrow if I get a chance.
The readings I got are as follows
1) 26psi
2) 52psi
3) 56psi
4) 56psi

Now I thought these readings were quite low which I gather is because the engine was cold and hopefully when I do it when the engine is hot the readings should be a lot higher.
Anyway I think number 1 is suspect what do you think?

Cheers dazz :pimp

I think you might have a typo - All are 100 PSI short of the mark

I know I didn't know whether it was because it was cold or whether the compression tester wasn't sealing in the spark plug hole.
The wiki say 87 to 131 psi with a min of 73psi so hopefully a hot test would bring these result I don't really know
The tester is the sort you screw a adaptor in the hole and has a push fitting on the gauge part?

When I install the tester adapter into spark plug hole do I just do it up hand tight or do I nip it up like a spark plug?
Cheers
