How much weight can the van carry??

Plan to pick up 50 odd slabs measuring 600X600 at the weekend but have no idea how much the van can carry. Is this possible??? Probably be 2 trips I think lol

Answer = ~1,000 Kg (It's the next page after page 12.42 of the Haynes )

I picked up 9 x 3ft x 2ft thick concrete paving slabs (what's that in "foreign" measurements ) They weighed a lot You could certainly feel the effects on the way the van drove, but in a good way. It felt much more stable, handled bumps and road imperfections much better and even cornered better.

I have said before that these vans were designed to carry lots of weight as builders vans, delivery vans etc, so our lightly loaded campers are too light on the springs and shocks. Instead of folks looking at "heavy duty" springs and shocks as listed on various sellers websites (incl BW) we should be looking at softer springs and shocks than standard (imho of course).

Max laden weight is on your VIN plate.
Unladen weight depends, of course, on how the van's fitted out. If it's a bare tintop panel, then you'll be looking about a ton. Subtract the weight of any camping gear from that.

I think the number I read in all the bumpf I just got with my van said something in the region of 650kg (thats for a Westy pop-top) - but don't quote me on that.

I did something similar a couple of years ago for my patio in a hired transit which could take (again I *think*) just shy of a ton. I took a set of bathroom scales, weighed myself with and without a slab and did the maths from there. We probably got 25 or so in and that was pushing it weight-wise.

Gut feeling, you're looking at more than 2 trips - depending how far you have to go and what you're driving I almost say hire a transit, it might be cheaper than all the fuel and b*ll-ache.

In all seriousness, that was just shy of 800kg into an empty, tin top panel. They were loaded evenly between the axles. There was obviously a marked effect on performance from a stand-still, but overall it dealt with it very well.

There's "can" and there's "can, legally". If Mr Plod thinks you look a bit low, and points you to a weighbridge, a second trip will rapidly start to look preferable.

It's worth remembering, though, that the payload isn't that far different to nominally much bigger vans. The 3.5t Tranny Luton we rented t'other week had "ULW 2480kg" stencilled on the door - so one ton payload for that, too, despite a MUCH bigger cubic volume. And a tail lift. Which is probably why the ULW was so relatively high...

A very good point. The 'aftermarket extras' increase the weight of the vehicle tremendously. How much does a suite of cabinets, cooker and fridge weigh? Not to mention all the other bits and pieces we pack in. Then there's the pop top or high top.

Not only that but as the vehicle shows its age the springs, shockers and mountings get 'tired'. Braking distances increase considerably.

Better take them one at a time!!!

Depends on whether it's been maintained properly, or just "serviced", of course... Our van might have 180k miles on it, but I know the rear springs are near-new, whilst all the dampers look no more than a handful of years old. Quite a few other country MOTs check for damper function - it's a big omission in the UK test, IMHO.

32 x 50 = 1600kg could be 3 or 4 trips
