Got a bit of a problem checking the timing on my 2.1 DJ.
I have run the engine up to normal operating temp, disconnected plugs from ISU (and plugged them together) disconnected single wire and plugged vacuum pipes to dizzy. When I do this preparatory to checking the timing the engine then wont idle and stalls on me before I can get from cab back to the engine.
I've never had this happen before and always check timing and tickover as part of six monthly service. Previously it has seldom needed any adjustment (only when I changed back from 95 to 98 octane fuel). Its currently set at 10 degrees BTDC for 98 octane.
As soon as I connect plugs back to ISU etc everything ticks over fine but thats not helping me to check timing and idle.
I've tried making an idle adjustment (180 degrees of anti clockwise turn on adjustment screw) but no joy.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks as ever.
Pete

Re: 2.1 DJ timing
Sorted
Decided to try even more idle adjustment and went another 180 degrees anti clockwise. This got me idling and I then needed to slow it by 90 degrees clockwise to get to 800 RPM. Timing was then spot on.
So all is good on that front but I can't understand why all of a sudden the idle adjustment is out by 270 degrees... maybe just elderly components?
