How do you fit a awning to a westy hightop?

Post by Ottojsy »

Hi I need some advice.
I'm about to buy a fiamma f45 awning and was wondering what's the best way to fix it to a westy high top?
Just my preferance but I think it looks better bolted to the hightop rather than using the gutter fixing kit.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Mike

You'd need to remove the interior hardboard, and sort some serious load-spreading out. There's a metal frame inside which should be a good start.

This Samba thread's got some good shots of what you'll find in there.

So shiny new fiamma f45 arrived the other day, I decided to go for the gutter fix kit it my westy hightop.
I've cut away all the gutter sealant only to find there is no where near enough space to attach the bracket.
Has anyone any idea where to go from here - I was considering cutting away a small section of the lip that holds the hightop down?
Someone must have fitted these before - any ideas.

I don't have a westfailure but try editing your first post and change the topic title to convey your problem better :ok

California Dreaming has one on his westfalia, maybe ask him

Also post up some pics of your gutter and the bracketry in relation to the gutter :ok

The only problem with using a gutter clamp on a Westy Hightop are that the gutter is full of sealant - but that's easy enough to dig out where required. Well, apart from the generic problem of it being too low, but that's probably just me...

The other option would be to bolt it through the side of the hightop. You'd need to remove the interior trim to make sure you either picked up on the reinforcements inside or put some load-spreading in, to save the fixings pulling through the GRP.

Cheers Adrian
I'm thinking bolt through the hightop is the way to go
Think it looks much better, besides I've dug out the sealant and still left with the lip that holds the roof on.
Got no idea how it's done though?
