NVH

Post by dekhelia »

Noise, vibration, harshness ... what do you guys do to get this to a minimum?

Petrol engines, from my experience, produce way less than the diesel variants. But my diesel (1,9l replacement for the 1,6l JX lump) is a noisy bug_ger, really. There seems to be a suppressive lining of some kind attached to the engine bay/rear passenger compartment bulkhead, but at near on 30 years old it's probably not really doing much suppressing any more, having been out in the elements all that time.

I'd rather not try and replace this, as it'll probably be an expensive nightmare: would it be better to fill the seat compartment on the other side of the bulkhead with some sort of material? What material is best? Also, the engine cover insulation is also most likely past its best - any ideas for superior replacement materials?

Any ideas most welcome, particularly about the best (and cheapest!!) materials to try.

Might be worth looking at the source first, eg. exhaust, inlet tract, engine/trans mounts, drivetrain/wheel balance. All sorts of things contribute to NVH. If you've had an engine swap, has this compromised the original characteristics of (eg) the air inlet, exhaust outlet position.. ? Do still have the original TD under-tray, might be worth seeking one out if not.
