Gas service recommendations & Haynes Manuals

Post by budda666 »

I'm going to hold off from the big woohoo I've bought a van thing until tomorrow when we pick him up (don't like to jinx these things but it's a 87 Joker 1.6 turbo diesel if you're asking), but have a couple of things I need to be getting sorted that I would appreciate some help with.

I want to get all the gas system checked out - I'll be doing a trawl of the web at lunchtime but would welcome any recommendations for the York/Malton area if anyone has them. I've read about getting fuel lines checked and everything as well and have someone who can have a look at that, but less concerned about this as I understand it had a new fuel tank fitted last year.

Also, can anyone point me in the direction of a decent workshop manual? I'm getting the feeling these things are like hens teeth as the only Haynes one I've found so far is the blue 82-90 petrol transporter one. Call me a pessimist but I have this strange feeling I'm going to need one...

Congratulations on the van.

Re. manuals, there isn't any one manual that covers campers with the JX 1.6 TD engine. If you have the Haynes manual then that will give you most of the basics for everything but the engine. For the engine, the only thing readily available is a small engine specific manual that JustKampers sell - I believe there are also specific Haynes type engine manuals that also apply but don't have any references for these. A lot of people also like to have the Bentley service manual to hand - again it doesn't cover the JX but it is essentially a VW Workshop manual but in english.

To get the gas system serviced try a caravan dealer ... they carry out 'Habitation Checks' for the less-fortunate shed-dragging fraternity

Don't buy a manual. I have a Haynes one here that you can borrow any time.It doesn't cover the diesel engine but it'll do for everything else. Just give me a call or tell John at the garage (he knows who you are now  ) when you need to borrow it. I think I've used it about half a dozen times in the past year
As Ian said, try a caravan dealer/workshop. The place on the A64 is VERY expensive though. Would you please give me feedback on who you use (price, helpfulness etc) as I need mine doing this year.
btw, are you giving the van a name? I see you have decided it's a 'He' :)

My local calor gas showroom checked mine out for me and didn't charge a bean. Seemed more interested in chatting. He even fitted a couple of new pipe olives. :D

Cheers for the offer of a lend of the manual, I hope never to have to take you up on it :rofl

The name is Eddie - chosen by our son.

Trying a few places for the service so will let you know, people don't seem to want to ring me back with a quote though.

I've rung round a few places for a gas test / service now but because it's a Westy with the underslung gas tank, nobody will touch it with a barge pole (except a guy who will charge £30 to have a look and see if he can do anything with it).

Any names for people out there who do it, preferably North Yorkshire but will look further afield if I have to, I want to get using stuff in anger and it's not really something I want to take too much of a chance on!
