with the bigger air scoops the engine does run cooler at motorway speeds i have tested this also running the rear numberplate flap partly open aids cooling on a Aircooled engine but temperatures soon rise in slow moving traffic with flap open

Yes, indeed they do. The extra ram effect does the job nicely. Not sure it helps in terms of drag but I doubt it would even register given the brick-like contours of these babies.

where did you get the bigger scoops from? cheers

i made the scoops myself out of a plant tray as recomended by the meister , the carbon ones i bought from a german show

hi torsen the scoops i have completely cover the vent and are loads bigger than the ones you have bought , they also stop most of the water dripping down the vent when its raining and they fasten to van without any drilling or bonding

Plant trays are so useful. I have one on my dash (black) fixed with double-sided tape, lined with anti-slip mat. Holds everything I need.

Understand your doubt whether they are a carry-over from air-cooled days, however, look at the South African model that was completely redesign before starting production in 1991. The rear air vents were part of that redesign and remained in place. Volkswagen evidently consider them necessary on water cooled as well.

Maybe not for the reason you think.

I understand the SA ones are used to feed the Air Con and provide fresh air flow. Notice that the late SA vans don't have the vents in the rear part of the rear windows anymore, as this vent is built into the rear body vents. The exit vents on the rear is to let air out. I'm unsure if the inlet side feeds only into the AC, or if it runs into the engine bay as well.

I'm unsure if the inlet side feeds only into the AC, or if it runs into the engine bay as well.

Mine is the Microbus, so no factory air-con. The left hand vent feeds into the engine bay and to the injector cooling fan. The right hand one feeds air to the KJet metering unit.
The rear vents, as you say, are air extraction from the cabin.
