which oil ?

Silly question I know but the guy before me has been using 15w -40 oil is this the right stuff ? he is going to check on Monday with his garage to see what they have used in the past.

Is part synthetic okay ?

Original Air Cooled lump....go with what we know will work, 15W40. As for part synthetic...yes if it's been well maintained and had regular oil changes, no if you think it may have been neglected...but this is just a rough guide.

And nothing to do with you but this has turned out to be a very sensitive subject and much talked about so feel free to carry out a search which will give you much debated info and of course the WIKI ^^^ which aims to give no nonsense proven advice. ^^^^^^^^ look at the top for WIKI.

Though....... the Wiki also says "...a 10W40 would perform like a 10 rated oil from cold but some owners (including us) consider it too thin for the VW engine and more likely to work its way past pistons and burnt..."

Which doesn't make sense, as oil is THINNEST when hot, so at 100C (the temperature the second number is rated at), it's FAR thinner than "cold" (40C - the temp the W rating is taken at - the W is for Winter). So at operating temperature is when it's most likely to "work its way past pistons", which is when it's the SAME viscosity as a 15W-40. or a 20W-40 or even straight 40 weight monograde oil

Even a 10W-60 is still thicker cold than hot. and remember the cold rating is taken at 40C, so a 0C morning means the oil is thicker still!

The SAE viscosity "40" rating @100C is about 12.5 cSt to 18 cSt. The 10W rating (40C) is about 20 cSt to 30cSt.

Can't argue with that!
However it goes on to mention 'tappet drain' which for many (but not all) owners is the main reason we wouldn't recommend going as low as 10 weight cold spec.
