When your fuel tank was replaced, did you clean the carbs and replace the fuel filter? had a similar problem with my old CU, had a crack in the Carb and had to be replaced and flushed the fuel system and replaced the inline filter.

Not quite sure what you are referring to Metal Mickey? The carbs were cleaned up and gaskets replaced, and I had done the 'take the air filter off, cover the carb trick to suck out the crap..the filter near the tank looks like it needs a change, willget that done.

a lot of resources are being used to try guess whats wrong , often a picky can show somethin g obviouse, sarran has fantastic knowledge of these and he also asked for you to take a picture and post it on here. thats what i meant :wink:

Have you tried changing the ignition amplifire module i had issues with my 2ltr cu back fireing, holding back then running fine for a few days put a new one on ran fine for a couple of years at which point i rebuilt the engine due to camshaft failure, two months after rebuild the hall unit packed up so fitted the standard svda points, condensor dizzy that was fitted to a 2ltr cj bay window (before they changed them to hall effect) these were fitted to 2ltr type 4 Aircooled motors with manual gearbox VW 022-905-205S BOSCH 0231 170 093 VW 021-905-205P BOSCH 022-905-205S, 0231 168 005. Finding one that is not worn out could be a problem though.

Hi, no I haven't changed the aplifier ignition module, although I've read that I can bypass the engine stabiliser unit? The other thin worth entioning, is that after the carb gaskets were changed at the garage, when I picked it up, the throtlle felt different, eg it needed ore gas to pve, and so drove like that for a few weeks, stupidly thinking that it had something to do with the carb spacers being off the engine now..suffice to say I will get it back into the garage as its sitting idly on the drive, and it my only daily driver :( I will discuss changing the dizzy with the to the SDVA dizzy that I have..

Hello,

That dizzy is just right to use as per my (above) video.. :)

This will allow you to ditch the old system with electronics for a simple reliable system, needing checking once a year...

Either get it set up as per the video..

or post it to me and I will set it up, run it, and ....

sorry but 009s do not work properly on a cu motor, sarran I know you run this set up but on a ct, cu's being a type 4 motor have different advance curves to a type 1 motor.

it will run, it may even seem acceptable but it will never ever be right.

as for fitting points that's a huge step backwards imho.

if it was mine I'd get the proper dizzy, the one vw designed for the engine, if 009s fitted and worked correctly why would vw go to the trouble of building a new one?

I'm sure andy-van has a few good used ones to hand.

You are right in that type 4 motors have different advance curve to the type 1 motor, the best place for the repro 009 is the nearest skip but the dizzy in the picture has a vac on the side, 009s are mechanical only advance, unless you modify it. All type 4 motors ran svda before the introduction of the electronic setup, i put a list of some of the part numbers of the dizzys used on type 4 motors by vw early on in this post but i am interested on hearing sarrans views on the new dizzy as good early type 4 motor dizzys are getting harder to find in useable condition.

Why would you take a retrograde step? Any dizzy can be reconned to keep what should be there.

Electronic ignition is light years ahead of poxy points.....
