rear vents
I have vw t25 1985 water cooled. I want to customize the rear vents. I have had them taped up for about 5000 miles and it has not effected the temperature at all. Before I do the full job I wonder if any of you guys in the know can tell me if I might find problems in later years.
Thanks

Re: rear vents
It may of not over heated in the not so warm weather but if one day the sun does show it face again and it hot you could find it over heats quickly

Re: rear vents
Doesn't one of them also feed the engine with a nice supply of fresh cold air?

Not sure if the water cooled needs it but I will think it all through carefully before I re design and re spray. Thanks for your comments.DavidPallister wrote:Doesn't one of them also feed the engine with a nice supply of fresh cold air?

Correct!DavidPallister wrote:Doesn't one of them also feed the engine with a nice supply of fresh cold air?
Blanking them off is, frankly, daft.

Re: rear vents
Understand your doubt whether they are a carry-over from air-cooled days, however, look at the South African model that was completely redesign before starting production in 1991. The rear air vents were part of that redesign and remained in place. Volkswagen evidently consider them necessary on water cooled as well.

Re: rear vents
The design is your engine is supplied with air ... water and dust free

Re: rear vents
Many thanks. I take the point though I do need to re design as I have put a carver water heater (for the shower) straight through between the panels, below the vent and on the other side I have squeezed a propex heater behind the rear lights below the vents. Water tends to be a small problem. However I think I now have a solution: I use the vents from one side to the other, inside out which gives a proper louvre. The surrounds will be customized before re spray so they let air in but not rain!! I will then fit extra vents from the range rover below the vents near the wheel arch. These vents will take an extra flow of air via sealed tubes over the engine its self. Well that's the plan!!!Wychall wrote:Understand your doubt whether they are a carry-over from air-cooled days, however, look at the South African model that was completely redesign before starting production in 1991. Once again thanks for all your comments I now know not to block them off......

Re: rear vents
why not just buy different vents there are quite a few styles to choose between most of them are made to supply more air to the engine though

Re: rear vents
The vents serve little or no use in terms of additional incoming cool air. They are mainly there to allow out hot air OUT when you're sitting in traffic. After all, with the engine seals in place, how else is any heat going to get out? With everything original, and all tinware in place, the upper part of the engine is effectively in an enclosed box.
