2.1 injection, starts first time but once warm wont start .

Hi guys, my mates 2.1 devon 86. Has just been serviced new plugs,leads,air filter,oil,roter arm and dizzy. Drove round for week or so perfect. Still starts first turn and runs great ! But once warm even 10/15mins if you turn engine off just wont start again until its left to go completly cold. Then again first turn of key starts again runs perfect etc...... Any ideas? Cheers lee

won't start doesn't tell us enough
do you mean that it turns over on the starter and won't run or it doesn't turn over ?

Yes turns over but just wont fire up. All plugs sparking etc.....

Not great with mechnics. Brother in law did service. Hes checked things over but carnt see anything. Like i say drove perfect for a week or so then just suddenly started doing this.

How well does it run and idle when it's hot, but without being turned off? When it's up to temp, does the exhaust smell really rich/petrolly?

No runs fine. .... like i say soon as switch engine off then wont start again. Until cold..

could be temp2 sensor, only a few quid...change the temp sender and hairpin clip while in there, I would clean all the electric contact points with contact cleaner, check the earth straps, check that the fuel pump is priming, replace the fuel filter, clean the afm with contact cleaner

If it was the Temp2, it'd be thinking the "choke was out", so stinking of unburnt fuel and running badly.

GTA - what's the cold idle speed like? Have you got your foot on or off the throttle when you're trying to restart hot?
I'm wondering if the idle control's a bit funny, and the idle speed's been dropped low to try and compensate.

when my temp2 was failing it was intermittent, would start and run fine some days others it would behave like vanagon syndrome fine for 30 40 miles, then switch its self on and buck and kangaroo then be normal for days/weeks, I also had occasional hot start problems. to be fair I think mine had a few issues inc the temp2, the majority of which where poor electrical connections. after wasting time and money on a rather large box of spares inc afm and an ecu I wish id had the good fortune to spend a tenner on a temp2 and a fiver on contact cleaner and a tooth brush.

Like I say van starts the first turn idle is fine. After 15 mins idle still fine no changes drives fine no misfires nothing but if turn engine off will not start again first time it happend took about 10/15 turns of the key and then started. Have tried at home drive and just wont restart once been started and warmed up. Temp2 could be option.,,

It could be a lot of things, personally I'd be checking values and continuities and wiring connections and the like before spending any money changing anything - the engine should start, it has a base map that will run and when you turn the ignition switch as well as sending a signal to the starter to energise it it also tells the ecu 'this is start', ecu sets appropriate fuel and manages spark and go - obviously you need to test it cold then run it and then test it again, temp 2 is the culprit often but not always and it could be something expanding and losing contact
with a DJ the ecu only controls fuelling really so if it won't start and there's no smell of fuel after cranking then I'd be checking the fuel side if there is definately air and spark, fuel pump relay failure for example when hot won't switch but will when cold and stays switched even when hot but then won't switch if released when hot
