Help needed right now re speedo cable through hub etc

Post by fairwynds »

Help please! Cant find it in the WIKI/search!

Following big works on front brakes, trying to refit the nearside hub nut cover with the square hole through it for the speedo cable, its very tight. How on earth do you get the square end on the speedo cable through the hole! Its driving me mad, and to help matters its peeing down with rain!
Thanks all :?

Just swapped the speedo cable on ours this morning...

It's physically impossible to thread the speedo cable through the grease cap unless... you take the grease cap off first. Then it's really quick and easy (or should be - is yours on or off?). If yours is already off, then maybe just file the hole a bit bigger - so long as it can't turn relative to the cap, it'll be fine. Don't forget the circlip!

The other bit of fun'n'games is getting the rubber grommet into the hole in the hub - and the new BW cable didn't come with one on at all, had to swap it off the old one. Also had to swap around the bulkhead grommet and the reinforcing sheath - they were the wrong way round. Should be grommet - sheath - grommet.

Thanks AdrianC
answered the query and then some... :)

The speedo cable wasnt being replaced, but I'd had the steering knuckles apart to do top and bottom joints, discs, bearings, pads, splash guards etc. For the life of me, when putting the metal cap back on I couldnt get the cable to poke through! Sorted now, cleaned out the square hole with a needle file, then tried it for size the 'wrong way around' before knocking cap back on, cable poked through, grabbed with pliers, circlip replaced, sealant added... all good.
Its been a long few days work and I think Ive all but had enough today! New day tomorrow :ok

Thanks again. FW

Ah, gotcha now... Thinking about it, pulling the bung out from the back of the hub, then sliding the grommet back along the cable towards the spare wheel well, would allow you to move the cable further out from the disk, making the grease cap easier to put on.

I have done it more than once without taking the cap off, turn the cable from the cab and hub until it aligns then use a small screw driver through the hole and fiddle it through.
