Westy Luggage Rack at speed...

Post by dickie14 »

Hi all,

I have a problem with the luggage rack in front of the pop top on my Westy - when I get over about 65mph (I know, lucky me) air gets forced under the front edge and it vibrates against the roof. The noise it makes is incredible, it's like there's a pneumatic drill hammering away... And before everyone suggests driving slower, with the right headwind it can start drilling away at much lower speeds!

Anyway, I've dealt with it for the last three years by running a strip of gaffer tape along the front edge but it's a nasty bodge so I wondered if anyone else had suffered from this and if there was a better way of dealing with it?

maybe the fixings underneath are rotting away and letting it lift up?
Time is a drug. Too much of it kills you

That sounds about right Dickie. (This feels weird talking to you on here rather than walking over to your place and checking it out).

Well, I once tried to take it off and my screwdriver was just chewing out the slots on the four screws which hold it onto the brackets so I gave up... Time for a bigger screwdriver, shame I can't get any plusgas in there really.

Mind you, my gaffer tape is a kind of aerofoil I guess, perhaps I just need to convince myself it's a more high tech solution than it looks!

Pat, be warned if you drive by my place - I've just completed my first coat of rustoleum, it looks good from 10 yards but up close you can see my prep work was somewhat shy of a pro! Give me a few few more coats and weekends with the sander before a full inspection...!

Cheers,
Dickie

Good luck Dickie. Look forward to seeing the painting finished. As far as the screws go, they obviously need replacing, so when I come over and look at it we may find a suitable solution. I will probably walk over and we can have another pint or two and talk van stuff.
