engine mounting

i have a t25 1.9 td and one of the engine mounting bolts has sheered off and garage says cant be fixed and i need a new engine is this right can anyone shed any light on this please, also i have just moved to warwick can anyone recommend a garage suitable for t25 diesel. thanks.

hi, depends if theres anything left of the broken pin still poking out. if so your in with a chance. weld a nut using a plug weld to the inside of the broken pin then while its still hottish undo the welded nut. hope this helps

If it has gone in one of the raised thread bosses and is flush you may get it out by using an ultra thin cutting disc and cutting a slot just deep enough to get an impact driver slot bit into, personally I don't have much faith in bolt extractors! It shouldn't be very tight in there as it is no longer under tension. Heat and plus gas would aid the use of an impact driver.

I've removed sheared off engine bolts before by drilling into them and hammering a 12 point spline bit in and then getting it out with a wrench as usual. I agree that the stud removers which have the reverse thread direction are dubious - they tend to expand the bolt which doesn't help. I can't quite believe the garage suggested you needed a new engine just for a sheared bolt though!

The other possibility is drilling the bolt with a left handed drill bit - the heat and drilling action will often remove it. (yes you can get them for jobs like this - they aren't in the realms of sky hooks and tartan paint ) Not cheap though. I certainly wouldn't use that garage - they sound useless.
