Insulation - Double sided U-Foil

Hello all,

I just got some double sided U-foil from a local guy.

I got 45 sqm for £90. More than I need but I wanted to have enough for the whole job.

I know this has been covered lots on here, yet still after a good hour or so reading up it's hard to get a definitive answer as to which is best, Rockwool, Foil etc or how to use it. I need to get this van finished ASAP as I am off abroad and it's going to be in storage (or a field lol).

My Plan at moment:
- Attach foil insulation to panels, floor, doors and battery trays etc with some reflective insulation tape.
- Not tape every edge to panel etc as will create water traps
- Once secure in place create a VCL (Vapour Control Layer) with plastic sheet to keep moisture out?

I am after quietening the road, engine and pump noise as well as doing a good job to keep van warm in winter and cool in summer.

Can anyone advise if I am wrong anywhere. My main areas I am not sure on are:
Should I fully tape each sheet of foil all around the edge with tape so almost air tight.
Should I spray glue them to panels?
Is the foil OK to use under flooring etc.
Is the VLC layer needed, and is my method of using it correct?
Would doubling up on panels be beneficial?

Hi, I am in the process of painting my van and when I had the inside out, I fitted this stuff next to the metalwork. I didn't stick it in it is just cut to shape and fitted loose, but I refitted the old rockwool over the top which keeps it in place anyway.I don't really know if it a problem, but to my mind it was ok and just added a bit of extra insulation and also the bubbly stuff can't absorbe any moisture so keeps the rockwool away from the metal panels should they absorb any ?? I'm not sure it will kill much road noise as its fairly light stuff... you can get accoustic mating for that but no doubt that will be lots more money.I hope this helps

Rockwool in bags will give you the best insulation value (in bags to stop it getting wet. The tinfoil stuff is ok, but it's value is reduced if its fitted against the van wall. It's meant to be used by creating a pocket of air, so it would need to be fitted so it's not touching van wall or back of door cards and sealed properly. I had the tinfoil stuff in my old van, didn't do too much other than kill my mobile phone signal the new van will be getting a rockwool type insulation (nice and safe sheeps wool roof insulation.
Remember it's air that insulates not the product, look how much air rockwool can trap compared to the silver stuff....
That's only my lowly opinion though, I'm sure you'll now get plenty of its the best thing since sliced bread comments, end of the day it's better than nothing, but proper insulation is top dog

As for stopping getting the van damp.... Air circ is king, try and leave windows ajar, skylight slightly open ect. Making the van air tight will make the the problem worse in my opinion

I did my van with the stuff,and used spray glue. I did the pop top roof, original roof under the top bed, floor, under the r&r bed, etc Worked ok and is warmer inside on a cold night. Quieter too when driving, I can't hear the ends knocking quite as loud
