Wiring 1.9 TDI into my T25

Hi Guys..
I am looking for some help please with wiring up my van. It was a 1.6 TD and I am fitting a 1.9 TDi out of a 2000 (W reg) mk4 golf. The ecu has two plugs if that helps. Im not sure of the engine code as the stickers missing!.. I know I will need to fit throttle pedal (unless there is another way around it, the clocks, but how do I go about connecting it up. Thanks for any advise..

Hi, I may be able help. :)

Can you let me know the engine code ? If it's a mark 4, the engine will be one of the later style blocks, so will have to installed 'upright', as the JX sump etc don't bolt up to it.

Soz, just re-read your post, what about the ECU part number ? BTW the engine code is also on the block somewhere as part of the engine number, you may have to look closely for it though.

Hi,, thanks for your reply.. the engine is a ASV, can I use the sump off the 1.6td?, if not does the engine hit the lid!. what do I use for engine mounts etc..If I need to speak to you regarding parts can you pm me a contact..

ASV is a nice engine, 110hp, basically the latest and greatest rotary pump engine before PD took over. However its the next generation on from the type commonly fitted to T3's, so it presents a whole bunch of issues. Mainly, (a) the block is different so Jx sump and mounts wont fit (b) the electrics are next gen, depending on the year may have can-bus so you'll have to use the car clocks. Really it would need to be fitted upright with fabbed mounts and adapter plate. It would make a nice project particularly for a pickup.

PS. I should have said its v. similar to an ALH engine. Numbers of folk have fitted these, particularly in the states. You can buy fitting kits for $$ from Eurospec. Google for it... I could to the wiring if you want.

Thanks for your help.. looks like I bought the wrong engine!!,, to fit this will I need a petrol bellhousing?, and sump from a Passat (or similar).

No I can't recollect coming across an ALH or ASV swap in the UK, probably because there's abundant supplies of the earlier TDI which is easier to fit. In the States the TDI only really started to be sold with the ALH generation of engines, so there's more folk using them for swaps.

I wouldn't say you bought the 'wrong' engine, I'd actually quite like to get an ASV myself to put in my pickup, but it's a bit down the priority list as the moment..

there are a few ALH swaps in the US (as Andy said) - on tdiclub there are a few threads - here for example

I got confused initially as the ASZ engine is a PD engine, and the ASV (also abbreviation for Anti-Shudder Valve confusingly) is like the AHF or ALH. It's definitely possible and a good engine, but I reckon you need pretty good fabrication skills.

Thanks for the reply.. I have the engine on the stand at the moment, and because it has to sit upright there are a few possibilities on how to secure engine mounts. But because I need the engine low/on its side im going to sell the ASV and start again.. I will list it in parts.. But your both right- its a great engine (with 110bhp standard), I fitted a 2.1 pinto engine in a T25 many years ago, and that was tall but I cut out the engine lid and banded the centre, also fitted a GTI..

Just so you know fas products in the states do a sump for the later tdi's that enable you to fit the later engines at 50deg

Fair enough. Might be worth advertising it as a complete kit instead of breaking it ? I'd leap at it myself if I didn't have enough projects on..

Cheers Lloyd, not seen that before, always good to know about new stuff. Typical US kit really, based on petrol bell, and quite pricey. As we know though lying these engines over ain't always the best approach..

i'd stick that engine in upright, last evolution of the rotary pump... bulletproof... just raise the rear hatch a bit. With 20/20 hindsight this is what i would have done. I'm now going down the route of custom exhaust manifold to raise the turbo up

After reading that thread im sort off tempted.. do you guys know how high I would need to band my engine lid?. As the vans a Autosleeper the bed frame would also need to be raised, .
