Only able to use half a tank?

Post by stuartieboy »

Hi all,
My petrol gauge wasn't working and a spare sender was included with the sale, so I dropped the tank yesterday.
I ran out of fuel that morning, so I flung a jerry can in it and set off to the garage, where I drained almost 25 litres from the tank!!! How the heck is this? I ran it till it cut out again and I'm only getting around 30 litres in. I'm stumped, as it seems to be pretty exact each time!!

Any ideas?

Does your fuel tank have a fuel return connection - feed mis-connected to the return?
Failing that over to the petrol guys.

Is there a semi-blocked fuel filter stopping the fuel from getting to the carb? I had this problem before. Fine when first driving but after a time the crap in the filter stopped the fuel getting through.

That's possible, there is some crap sitting at the bottom of the filter, the bit that puzzled me was the fact that it was the same level in the tank each time?

Nope, all correct, as per wiki!

Right, crap in the filter will swirl around and block fuel after a certain amount of driving. Buy a couple of filters (keep one as a spare) they are so cheap. If you can see crap in the filter then that needs changing now. Change the one you have straight away (make sure you fit it the right way round - there is an arrow on the side showing fuel direction). If your tank got low in fuel at some point refilling was likely to have stirred up all the crap in your tank.

If that doesn't cure the problem completely, other advice will assist. Good luck.
